James does a lot of volunteering work. In 2003 he was instrumental in setting up The Breckland Society, a local history and conservation group in the Norfolk and Suffolk Brecks, and has served as its chairman for much of the time since. He was also the chairman of the Norfolk branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England from 2010–15 and is currently chairman of the Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust.
